Art Claflin
1950-07-07 2013-05-23
Arthur Cary Claflin, 62, passed away on Thursday, May 23rd at his home. Art was born July 7, 1950 in Bowling Green, Ohio to Edward S. and Mona (Cretney) Claflin. A graduate of Wesleyan University and Yale Law School, Art joined the law firm of Bogle and Gates in 1975. He joined the law firm of Hall, Zanzig, Claflin, McEachern in 2000. He married the former Gretchen Anders, also of Bowling Green, and together they had two children, Rachel and Emily.
Art had just returned from a trip to Scotland with his daughters when he passed away. His children were the loves of his life, and he was a devoted father. A true intellectual and gifted writer, Art's interest in current events, great literature, and history never waned. He loved doing the New York Times crossword puzzles, always in ink. An avid runner, Art completed several marathons including the Boston Marathon. He was a talented cook, loved to travel, and had a dry wit that his family will miss greatly. In accordance with his wishes, a private service is planned with great food and rock and roll music.
Art is survived by his two daughters, Rachel and Emily Claflin, Gretchen Claflin, his brother Thomas (Christine), and nieces and nephews.

Art was always a class act, evident from elementary school onwards. A great intellect, serious minded and purposeful, I, cognizant of my own limitations, was quite happy to be his second fiddle (VP) as he served as the President of the BGHS student council. He subsequent legal career in Seattle seemed preordained - I know he was a true success in the multiple facets of his life. Remembered with great respect.
tribute by Kathy Cheek-MilbyWe were BGSU basketball fans at a young age. It was difficult not to be with the success of the program in the early 1960s.
